The European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS) recently published a briefing regarding barriers to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) growth in Europe.
It is well known that SMEs play a key role in EU economy, as they represent 99% of all business in the EU. The development of SMEs is a priority for the European Parliament, also because it could significantly enhance job creation. Unfortunately, SMEs often produce weak results, facing more barriers to growth and development than larger firms. Beside accessing finance, that had worsened after the economic crisis, the biggest problems are complicated administrative procedures and complicated tax regimes.
The briefing provides an useful overview of the actions which have already been taken by the European Institutions in order to support SMEs.
